Course Description

The EKG Technician  program (MA)  provides will gain the knowledge and skills needed to earn a nationally recognized EKG technician certification, which includes measuring basic vital signs, performing rapid response procedures, operating an EKG machine, and identifying rhythms. As you prepare for your EKG technician certification, you will get solid introduction to key medical terminology, including the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, lymphatic, immune systems, and other important health systems you will need to know as an EKG technician.

 

Upon completion of this EKG technician course, you will be prepared to take the Certified EKG Technician (CET), provided by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). You will also receive a voucher for the Certified EKG Technician (CET) certification exam. The voucher is prepaid access to sit for the certifying exam upon eligibility.

Pre-Requisites

  • Access to a desktop  or laptop computer and Internet as well as a working knowledge of computers and are required.

  • Completing Medical Terminology before starting this course is strongly recommended. 

Learning Outcomes

  • Key terminology relating to the heart and its basic anatomy and physiology of the Cardiovascular System

  • An understanding of how an EKG uses electrical conduction to get readings on the function of the heart—concepts of cardiac polarization, depolarization, and repolarization

  • Correlate the actions of the heart represented by the p wave, PR interval, QRS complex, and T-wave

  • Calculating a heart rate from an EKG rhythm strip

  • Discover concepts of cardiac anatomy and physiology, infection control, and standard precautions appropriate to the role of an EKG technician

  • Understand proper machine protocols and maintenance

  • Review electrocardiography interpretation of various types of EKGs

  • Gain proper communication methods within clinical scenarios

  • EKG waveform analysis which includes interpreting cardiac of the following rhythms: sinus rhythms, atrial rhythms, ventricular rhythms, junctional rhythms, Heart Blocks, and interpreting artificial pacemaker rhythms

  • Recognize EKG findings of Myocardial Infarction and ischemia

  • Proper EKG lead placement and how to perform a 12 lead EKG

  • Performing stress testing

  • Holter Monitoring lead placement, procedure, and analysis

  • Understanding the interventions intended to correct the effects of insufficient tissue perfusion associated with dysrhythmia
